Vermeersch Brewery, Powered by Passion…
Located in the business park of Westmalle, the village of the world-famous Trappist monks, Vermeersch Brewery is an authentic craft brewery that deliberately operates on a small scale.
Each batch is brewed entirely by hand, driven by passion, authenticity and respect for the great Belgian brewing tradition — never by volume.
Only top-quality raw materials are used, carefully selected from suppliers as close to home as possible.
This focus on local origin ensures that every beer expresses the character and taste of Belgium, a UNESCO-recognized beer country.
LePlan range – Grand Cru Beers + Spirits
Vermeersch Brewery consciously chooses Grand Cru Beers & Spirits bottled in 33 cl Apo bottles and 75 cl champagne bottles — ideal for sharing, tasting and celebrating. These tasting bottles offer a unique beer experience and are perfectly suited for food pairing, allowing balance and finesse to shine.
The beers are packed in one-way cardboard boxes, just like LePlan wines, and feature labels with the iconic “Checkered Flag”, inspired by Dirk’s motorsport career. No funky slogans, but short, clear and straightforward names such as B.9 (Blond, 9% ABV) — making communication simple, transparent and powerful.

The Founder
DIRK VERMEERSCH (1952) RACER / DREAMER / CREATOR
A man of many lives. This is often said about racing drivers, but in Dirk’s case it can be taken quite literally. A former taxi driver, he quickly shifted up a gear to enter the “fast lane,” before hitting the brakes hard and choosing a completely different rhythm of life — that of nature, under the French sun, among the vines.
Today, he exchanges “the juice of the grape cluster” for “grain and hops,” embarking on yet another chapter as a brewer. Some people are born for success — but nothing ever comes without effort.
1977 – RACING CAR DRIVER (SEE RACING AWARDS)
Just two years after starting his career as a racing car driver, Dirk already stood on the top step of the podium at the 24 Hours of Zolder. It marked the beginning of a high-speed life at 200 km/h, filled with international successes, which came to an abrupt end in 1986 following a serious rally accident.
1988 – CAR DEALER
This accident forced Dirk to transition from racing driver to car dealer, where he soon represented
prestigious brands such as Lancia and Maserati.
1999 – WINEMAKER
Dirk left the automotive world behind and moved to the south of France to start a B&B in the Rhône Valley, seeking a slower pace of life. But when you are used to living at full throttle, a quiet life under the sun quickly becomes boring. And what do you do when you want to stay busy in the Rhône Valley? Exactly — you make wine.
He purchased just under two hectares of 40-year-old Carignan vines and got to work. Once again, it took him less than two years to achieve major recognition, this time with his wine GT-Syrah.
In 2005, his daughter Ann and her husband Sebastien joined the adventure, and in 2010 a brand-new winery was built in Suze-la-Rousse.
2022 – CONTRACT BREWER
With the next generation — Ann being his only child — fully involved, Dirk knew the future of the winery was in safe hands. Time for a new plan… retirement? Not a chance. Dirk returned to Belgium, where boredom quickly set in once again.
Six months of self-study, an online brewing course (Covid-style, of course) and hands-on experimentation provided the foundation for his first steps as a contract brewer, launching a new Belgian product: LePlan Tripel “Strong Blond.” This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the LePlan-Vermeersch story. And, as history often repeats itself, LePlan Belgian Craft Beers have already received several awards. The best is yet to come…
2024 – CRAFT BREWER IN WESTMALLE
A completely new craft brewery is installed in Westmalle.
The Team
Shaughn Dolèzal (1994) – Master Brewer
Despite his uncommon name, Shaughn Dolèzal was born and raised in Westmalle. When Dirk Vermeersch approached him saying, “My name is Dirk, and I’m starting a brewery in Westmalle,” Shaughn immediately saw an opportunity to take his passion for beer to the next level.
A dedicated beer enthusiast, Shaughn began brewing in his early twenties. His interest evolved into a serious pursuit, diving deep into the science of beer: biochemistry, fermentation, brewing techniques, serving, tasting and food pairing.
Over the years, Shaughn earned more than 40 certificates and qualifications, including those of certified beer sommelier, zythologist and brewer. He built an extensive network within the beer industry and shared his expertise with breweries and retailers alike.
The opportunity to co-found a brewery in his hometown of Westmalle as Master Brewer was irresistible. He joined the Vermeersch Family project with enthusiasm, applying his knowledge to optimize the brewing installation. This led to a natural collaboration between him and Dirk, where shared passion and complementary skills come together to create something truly special.
Michel Vandergeeten (1952) – Public Relations
Michel has a colourful background as a globetrotter, rally driver, painter and entrepreneur. Together with his father Emil, he built Vandergeeten Export into one of the largest agents for Belgian chocolate and beers in Eastern Europe, Mongolia and China.
Today, Michel enjoys his free time but remains actively involved with LePlan-Vermeersch as a valued public relations officer and sales advisor. His family ties with Dirk make the collaboration even more special: Michel’s father is the brother of Dirk’s mother, and Michel’s mother is the sister of Dirk’s father. Entrepreneurship clearly runs in the family.
Ann Vermeersch (1982) – Second Generation
When Dirk in 1999 sold his car dealership in Schilde and moved the family to Provence, Ann was just 17 years old. After an intensive French course and completing her secondary education in Business & Languages, she became fascinated by her father’s winemaking journey. She decided to follow in his footsteps and enrolled at a viticulture school in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region.
Alongside her growing passion for wine, Ann met her future husband, Séb Barbara. During her studies, she helped her mother with the family B&B and took her first steps in viticulture. In 2005, Dirk promoted her to co-manager and shareholder — a recognition of her dedication and hard work.
The motto that has guided Ann ever since? “Making wine is not difficult — making a difference is.” Words she puts into practice every day as part of a dynamic tandem with her eternally young father, and as a driving force behind the continuous evolution of LePlan-Vermeersch Winery.
